  8. This little applet should be dropped in the Startup Items Folder of the active
  9. System Folder. After startup, the applet will run in the background. The first
  10. time you run it, you will get a dialog asking you where your Eudora application
  11. is. Find it on your hard disk and press the return key. Make sure you do not also
  12. put an alias to Eudora in your Startup Items Folder, since launching Eudora
  13. before Eudora Announcer 2.1.3 might cause problems during the shutdown sequence
  14. of your Mac. Eudora Announcer 2.1.3 will launch Eudora automagically at startup
  15. time. Before you install Eudora Announcer 2.1.3, check the requirements below.

  17. **** What does Eudora Announcer 2.1.3 do? ****
  18.  
  19. When Eudora receives new mail Eudora Announcer 2.1.3 gets automagically notified
  20. by Eudora. Eudora Announcer 2.1.3 will tell you the sender and the subject of the
  21. new messages using the Speech Manager.

  23. **** Requirements: ****

  25. Speech Manager, Eudora 1.5.1 or better (it's a good idea to upgrade anyway),
  26. Applescript, Jon's Commands OSAX, Gestalt OSAX, Speech OSAX, Macintosh Computer.

  28. **** Troubleshooting: ****
  29.  
  30. 1) **DO NOT** run Eudora Announcer from the script editor: you need to know how
  31. Eudora works before attempting that. You will mess up your Eudora settings file:
  32. Eudora will start notifying Script Editor rather than Eudora Announcer.  If
  33. you're already experiencing problems because of this, do the following:
  34.  
  35. -IF YOU'RE NOT A SCRIPT WIZARD: Create a new Eudora settings file to replace the
  36. old one. OR -IF YOU REALLY THINK YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING: Clear all 'ENot'
  37. resources from your Eudora settings file using ResEdit and save.
  38.  
  39. 2) If you are having other problems with Eudora Announcer (it starts up, says
  40. ready to announce messages, but doesn't announce), try opening the script in
  41. Script Editor, change all references to "Eudora" into "whatever", during
  42. compilation you will get a dialog asking you where "whatever" is. Select your Eudora 
  43. app, and save. Now make sure to set the custom icon bit using resedit, or 
  44. you'll lose the lipstick icon.

  46. 3) If you are a Script Hacker, and you do not want to install Jon's Commands or the
  47. Gestalt OSAX, you can remove the designated parts of the Eudora Announcer 2.1.3
  48. Script. Remove the lines in the script between the comment  -- REMOVE these lines
  49. if... --

  53. Version 2.1.3:

  55. Fixed a cosmetic bug that causes all applets on your machine to get the
  56. announcer icon. If you've experienced this problem, please rebuild your desktop 
  57. after trashing previous versions of Eudora Announcer 2.x.
